Rev. William H. Bartels
Newark – Rev. William Harold Bartels, 70 died Sunday, May 12, 2002 as a result of an automobile accident.
Family and friends may call Thursday (May 16) from 2-4 and 7-9 and Friday from 1-2 at the Norman L.
Rev. Bartels was born the son of Henry and Marie Bessmer Bartels on November 8, 1931 in Independence, Missouri. Rev. Bartels received a Masters Degree of Sacred Theology and a Masters Degree of Clinical Psychology. He accepted a call to his first parish in Minnesota in 1957 and then moved to Otto, New York in 1959. He was Chaplain for New York State for over 30 years serving at West Seneca State School, Marcy Psychiatric Center and Central New York Psychiatric Center. In 1990 he accepted a call to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newark retiring in 1997. Rev. Bartels never did retire, he continued doing interim for several churches in the area. For several years he was on the radio program, “Lutheran Hour” in Buffalo. He enjoyed driving and had driven in all 48 states and all but two Provinces in Canada. Rev. Bartels sang in the “Maennerchor” (men’s choir) and toured Germany with the group.
Rev. Bartels was a member of the Newark Clergy Fellowship and volunteered for Meals On Wheels.
Rev. Bartels is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Dorothy Kettunen Bartels; children David (Peggy) Bartels of Clinton, NY, Deborah (Phillip) Beiderbecke of Valhalla, NY, Sharon (Kenneth) Stone of Massachusetts and Mark Bartels of Georgia; grandchildren Timothy and Audrey Bartels, Lane and Samantha Stone; mother Marie Bartels of Missouri; brother Donald (Jacque) Bartels of Missouri; sister Barbara Hulse of Missouri; nephew Ben and niece Beth Ann.
