On July 17, 2014, the Reverend Dr. Douglas William Caldwell, 71, resident of Hanover Township was received into the more immediate presence of our Lord. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a pastor, colleague, mentor and true friend to many. Douglas was born in Charlotte, NC on May 7, 1943, the younger of twin boys, to David Franklin and Margaret Ashburn (McInvaill) Caldwell. He attended Little Church on the Lane Moravian Church, where he was baptized and confirmed his faith. He graduated from Myers Park High School in 1961, Moravian College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1966, Moravian Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity in 1969, and Drew University with a Doctorate of Ministry in 1984. Douglas was married to Barbara Ann Brautigam, in the Old Chapel of the Moravian Church on June 4, 1966. On December 31, 1969, they were blessed with their first child, son Douglas, Jr., and on June 1, 1972, they welcomed their daughter, Kendis Ashley. Doug was ordained as a presbyter of the Moravian Church in 1969. He received his first call to Reading Moravian Church in 1969. He returned to Bethlehem in 1975, to serve as pastor at College Hill Moravian for eight years, and finally, was installed as senior pastor at Central Moravian Church in 1983, where he served for 26 years until his retirement in 2009. Doug was a leader in the community, who maintained many professional and civic affiliations, including Moravian College, Moravian Academy, Bethlehem Area Moravians (BAM), and Moravian Hall Square. His current involvements were with St Lukes University Health Network, AAA East Central, and Moravian Village. With his wit, wisdom and love for life, he will be deeply missed by his wife Barbara, daughter Ashley, and son Doug, Jr., daughter-in-law Quinn (Respet), granddaughters, Evan Rachel and Farrah Elizabeth (Poppys grand girls). family also includes his mother Margaret McInvaill of Nazareth, sister Mary Lynn and brother-in-law Dan Morrill of Charlotte, NC, their daughters, nieces Linda Sterritt and her husband, Mary Dana Morrill and their children, and twin brother David and sister-in-law Polly Caldwell of Winter Haven, FL and their sons, nephews David (Chip), Mark, and Doug Caldwell and their spouses and children.
