Rev. Thomas Edmund Hosinski, C.S.C., 76, died at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind. on October 24, 2022.

Fr. Hosinski was born on October 9, 1946 in South Bend, Ind., the only child of Edmund and Martha Hosinski (Drajus), who preceded him in death.

Fr. Hosinski attended St. Hedwig’s Grammar School before entering Holy Cross High School Seminary in 1960. After graduation, he entered the Holy Cross Sacred Heart Novitiate in Jordan, Minn. on August 15, 1964, professed final vows on February 11, 1972 and was ordained a Holy Cross priest on April 7, 1973. In 1969, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology. In 1972, he earned a Master of Arts in Theology from the University of Notre Dame. After ordination, Fr. Hosinski began Master’s and Doctoral studies in theology at the University of Chicago, earning a Master of Arts in Theology in 1976 and his Ph.D. in Christian Theology in 1983.

In July 1978, Fr. Hosinski accepted a teaching position in the Department of Theology at the University of Portland, Ore. where he remained until moving to Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind. in 2022. Fr. Hosinski wrote in his 25th Jubilee biography, “Teaching theology is very rewarding because of the opportunity to influence young, developing minds and hearts and to help students come to appreciate what theology can add to their education and self-formation.”

Fr. Hosinski authored, The Image of the Unseen God: Catholicity, Science, and Our Evolving Understanding of God (Catholicity in an Evolving Universe), a book on the philosophy and philosophical theology of Alfred North Whitehead; and Stubborn Fact and Creative Advance, a book concerning the doctrine of God. He also co-authored The Theology of John Macquarrie 1919-2007: A Comprehensive and Contextual Exploration which examines one of the most important Anglican theologians of the 20th century. Fr. Hosinski has written a wide range of articles and papers throughout his career.
