The Rev. H. Gene Pool, 84, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Greenleaf Health Campus in Elkhart.

He was born May 5, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Clyde and Bertha (Kennedy) Pool.

On Sept. 2, 1951, he married Mary Esther Scott in Muncie.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Pool; daughters Carmen (Ken) Wolf, Candi (Steve) LaPlace and Cynthia (Donald) Kramer; brothers Phil (Mollie) Pool and Jim (Cheryl) Pool; sister Sharon (Ted) Caton; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceding Gene in death were his brother, Clyde Dean Pool and his sister, Wanda Martin.

Pastor Pool received his Master of Divinity degree in 1953 at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo. He then pastored several churches in the Northeast Indiana District of the Church of the Nazarene for 45 years. He pastored the Elkhart Northside Church of the Nazarene for 13 years, where he was instrumental in acquiring and building at the current location of the church. He also served on numerous district committees and administrative boards and was the district youth director for many years.

Gene had a shepherd’s heart and dedicated his life to God’s work and to the service of others. He had a passion for ministering to those inside the church and throughout the community: being God’s love in action to others.
