Fr. Alban Anthony Sueper, 96 passed away on May 6, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Manor three weeks short of his 97th birthday. 

Born in Lindsay, NE, he was the son of the late John and Mary Theresa (Windhalm) Sueper. He was the youngest of four brothers and five sisters and attended St. Bernard’s Parish.

Fr. Sueper graduated from St. Francis High School and then helped his aging father run the family farm during World War II.  In 1946, he was accepted by the Columbans and spent the summer brushing up on his Latin before starting his Spiritual Year in Bristol.  He then went on to the major seminary in St. Columbans, NE and was ordained as a priest on May 30, 1953 at St. Mary’s Church in Bellevue, NE.

He spent the year after his ordination in Louisiana studying tropical agriculture and left for the Philippines in the fall of 1954.  He studied the Cebuano language and served as the assistant at Molave, Zamboanga del Sur until 1958 when he became the first pastor of Domingag, a parish cut off from Molave where he stayed until 1961.

He returned to the United States in 1971 and began doing promotion work at the West Chester House serving as Vicar and Bursar.

In 1980, he became pastor at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Westminster, CA serving until 1986 when he became the local superior of Omaha House.  In 1992 he went to the Los Angles house as Vicar and Bursar then returned to Omaha house as Bursar in 1994.  1998 he became Director of the St. Columban’s Retreat House and in December of 2003 he celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a priest.

He was assigned to the Columban retirement house in May of 2005.
