Rena was born September 11, 1933 at the old Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah. She was the second daughter of Orville R. and Olga Smith Graham. She then went on to graduate from Weber State, attended BYU, finishing at Utah State with a degree in secondary education with a specialty in home economics.

She was a member of the LDS Church, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Eden Camp, and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 129. She excelled in dressmaking and loved to quilt.
