Reedus Back, 99, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Monday, November 29, 2021. Reedus was born in Letcher County, Kentucky, on September 17, 1922, to Joseph Back and Margaret (Maggie) Dixon Back.
Reedus is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carrie Jane Courtney Back.
Reedus learned the values of family and an honest day’s work while growing up on a family farm in the Eastern Kentucky hills with eight brothers and sisters during the Great Depression.
He was a World War II veteran, a graduate of Berea College, and also earned a Doctorate in Education from the University of Kentucky. He had a long and distinguished career in education, teaching in the Madison County and Pendleton County school systems as well as serving as Principal of Pendleton County High School and University Breckinridge High School in Morehead. He later taught and served as Dean of Graduate Programs at Morehead State University. Upon retirement, Reedus spent many hours researching his family roots and eventually traveled to Germany in search of his ancestry.
Reedus enjoyed gardening and was an active walker well into his nineties.
