Raymond A. D’Alessio Sr. of Holiday City South, Berkeley Twsp, NJ, and Tomball, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 15, 2015, at the age of 89 years old. Raymond was born on June 16, 1926, to Angelina and Gerard D’Alessio emigrated from Italy to the United States in 1904.
He was the 13th of 14 children with 9 sisters and 4 brothers. Raymond was born and raised in West Orange, NJ, and graduated from West Orange High School. Raymond proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II (1944-45) and was deployed in the Pacific campaign. He married his late wife, Mary Aufiero of Orange, NJ in 1950 and became a West Orange Firefighter. His hard work and passion for public service helped him eventually reach the rank of Deputy Chief. He retired from the Fire Department after 35 years of dedicated service to his hometown. Raymond loved West Orange and while residing there was active in many social, civic, and athletic activities and organizations. After retirement, Raymond and his wife, Mary moved to Bricktown, NJ where he served on the Planning Board of Adjustment and was active in the local Democratic Club. During his earlier years, Raymond loved playing baseball and later became an avid golfer who enjoyed sharing his love of golf with friends and family, especially his grandsons. He had an endless love of life and cherished his immediate and extended family. Raymond was also a strong believer in the American political system and was proud to impart his views to his family and friends. He was also known for having a very caring and generous side, being loved and revered by all who knew him.
Raymond is survived by his second wife Helen (nee Squicciarini), son Raymond A. D’Alessio Jr. and his wife Mary Jo of Cypress, Texas; daughter Angela Wagner and her husband Richard of Mendham and Seaside Park, NJ; four grandchildren, Adam and his wife Elizabeth of Palos Verdes, California; Jeffrey and his fiancée Lori Soukis of Los Angeles, California, Leigh of Verona, NJ, Raymond III of Bozeman, Montana, two great-grandsons, James and Harrison; and a brother Dr. Edward D’Alessio and his wife Rose of Haverford, PA. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
