Brunswick – Randolph Gunnar MacLean, 94, died Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at Van Rensselaer Manor.
Born in Bennington, VT, Randolph, the owner of R.G. MacLean Masonry for 60 years, was the beloved husband of Mary Catherine Clancy MacLean who died in 1981. He was the son of the late Donald MacLean and Armida Franson MacLean and was raised in Shaftsbury, VT, on a family dairy farm. After graduating from Bennington High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a radioman in the Army Air Corps stationed in Newfoundland.
Randy and his family moved to Eagle Mills in 1958 where he and his wife, Mary, raised their four children. A quiet person by nature with a good sense of humor, he enjoyed his children and grandchildren and their friends and the accompanying fun they all brought to the house. He was a master craftsman, renowned for his work in stone, brick and plaster, completing projects throughout the Capital District region and southern New England. He specialized in historic preservation, including fireplaces, churches and homes, as well as the design and building of signature fieldstone fireplaces. Always looking forward to the next project, Randy designed and built his own home when he was in his mid-seventies, the last house he built.
A loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, he loved animals, enjoyed the outdoors and his home state of Vermont.
Survivors include his children, Ann (Eamon) O’Brien, Eagle Mills; Sean Randolph Maclean, Eagle Mills; Mary Kate O’Brien, New London, CT; and Christina (John) Garner, Barnstable, MA; a brother, William MacLean, FL; five grandchildren: Christopher, Mollie, Eamon, Liam and Jack; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Mattison and three half-brothers, Malcolm, Donald and John McLean.
