Ralph E. DeWeil of Silver Ridge Park Westerly section of Berkeley Twp., NJ formerly of Fairfield, NJ, died at Community Medical Center, Saturday, May 24, 2014 on his 85th birthday after a long illness. Ralph was the 5th of 7 generations of his family to live in Caldwell, NJ. Ralph served 5 years in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S. Benham and the U.S.S. Abbot and received the Navy Occupation Service Medal.

After his honorable discharge, he married the love of his life, Thelma Susan “Sue” Schwartz of Passaic, NJ. He joined the Fairfield Police Department and proudly served the community for 25 years, until retiring as Captain in 1981, receiving numerous awards and commendations during his career. He was an expert marksman and volunteered as a leader of the Explorer Club. He was then employed with Retailers and Manufacturers as the Director of Security until his ultimate retirement.

He is survived by Sue, his wife of 58 years, his 3 children, Dawn DeWeil and her husband Jonathan Blausten of Glen Rock, NJ, Donna Simonowicz and her husband John Pompton Lakes, NJ and Ralph DeWeil and his wife Joann of Waldwick, NJ along with his four devoted granddaughters, Nicole, Tiffany, Alisha, and Samantha. He is also survived by his 2 brothers, Robert and Richard Westervelt, his niece Patricia Vytel, and brother in law John Schwartz and his wife Sharon.
