Phyllis Louise (Ludwig) Egland was born on July 3, 1934, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  She was adopted days later by Lloyd and Leona Ludwig.

In January 2019, Phyllis was fortunate enough to locate her birth family.  She learned that her mother, Winifred Richards (Whitaker) Quirk had named her Betty Jean.  Forced to give up her daughter, Winifred lamented the loss of her baby girl her entire life.  She later had a son, Garry Lee Whitaker, who married and had four children.  Phyllis was reunited with her birth family in March 2019 when the family gathered in Florida.  She was as thrilled to find them as they were to find her.  Although she was not able to meet her mother or her brother before their passing, she was able to learn all about them through her brother’s children and grandchildren.  It brought her great joy to add to her family so many new loved ones through her birth family discovery.

Throughout Phyllis’ life, her primary focus was her relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her two daughters, Tina Cook and Christine Egland; son-in-law, Lee Cook; grandsons, Joel Cook, Kevin Cook, Nathan Cook, Daniel Cook, and Kyle (Tara Slasky) Clasby; great-grandson, Erik Cook; great-granddaughter, Scarlett Clasby; two sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her birth mother, Winifred Richards (Whitaker) Quirk; adoptive parents, Lloyd and Leona Ludwig; husband of nearly 44 years, David A. Egland; birth brother, Garry Lee Whitaker; adoptive brother, Roger Ludwig; grandson, Matthew Cook; granddaughter, Leona Cook; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
