Phillip Dale Hanson was born August 27, 1946 in Pocatello, Idaho, to Irene (nee’ Lystrup) and Herbert Dale Sant. Phillip lived up to his name; he was a lover of horses all his life and Phil was loved all his life by all his family, aunts, uncles, cousins, from grandparents to grandchildren.

Phil enjoyed people and they enjoyed him. He liked fishing and especially, hunting. But if asked what was the most remarkable thing about high school, besides his friends, Phil would say playing the trombone in the Pocatello High School band as they marched in the Tournament of Roses Parade or maybe developing a love of history. Phil was a determined champion of the underdog. For instance, his belief that General Custer got a raw deal from historians.

Upon graduating from Highland High school, his patriotism led him to join the Navy and then volunteer for Vietnam where he served his country with honor. After graduating from the police academy, he began his career in law enforcement by becoming Lava Hot Springs’ youngest Chief of Police, dedicated to doing right by everyone.

August 14, 1974 Phil married the love of his youth, Carrie Lynn Lutz, the mother of his two children, Mathew Dale Hanson and Brenda La Prell Paz. Carrie died tragically in 1985, and Phil and Carrie were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple.

In 2014, Phil was fortunate enough to find true love again when he met and married Marlene Stoddard (nee’ Miller.)Phil died at home with Marlene beside him April 25, 2015.

He was pre-deceased by his sister, Audry Irene Hanson; his adoptive father, Russel Clayton Hanson; and his brother, Charles Clayton Hanson.

He is survived by his mother, Irene Harrison and her husband, Richard Terrence Harrison; son, Mathew and his wife, Vanessa (nee’ Grover) and their daughters Elizabeth Lynn and Emma Lee; daughter, Brenda and her sons, Takoda Dale Hanson and Kevin Lee Hall; and her husband, Daniel Paz.

Phil will be missed and mourned by many more friends and family.
