Obituary of Philip Varchenko

Philip Varchenko, 47, passed away on Thursday, July 14 after a courageous 2-year battle with cancer.

Philip was born on May 15, 1969 to Svetlana Roman and Anetole Varchenko in Novosibirsk, Russia. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 20 in New York City and supported himself by walking the streets and asking people if they needed work done. Eventually he settled in St Paul, Minnesota and began working at Wingspan Life Resources as a Direct Care Counselor, eventually working his way up to Program Director.

Philip truly lived a life of dedicated service, and his hallmark was his selfless ability to help, to console, to guide and to lift others up. Wingspan has been his extended family for some 25 years. He enjoyed many styles of music, was well-read, industrious, intelligent, tenacious, kind-hearted, compassionate and, through the years, built an ever-widening circle of friends. His leadership has been an integral part of our growth and our success. Equally as important, his friendship has provided each of us with treasured memories to comfort us during our time of great grief. He was a beautiful man with a lovely accent and a heart of pure gold.

He was preceded in death by his father Anetole.

Grateful for having shared his life are his mother Svetlana, brother Dmitri and two nephews and a niece; he also leaves behind his extended Wingspan family and his three cats Pasha, Tisha and Nikita whom he referred to as his boys.
