Philip S. Howard, 76, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at Jacksonville Skilled Nursing & Rehab.
He was born Sept. 17, 1935, in Galesburg, the son of C. Bruce and Ruth Evelyn Hooker Howard. He married Eugenia Shaw on July 17, 1958, in Peoria and she preceded him in death on July 8, 1992.
He is survived by two step-sons, David Richard Hoots, Jr. of Woodson and Robert Michael Hoots of Jacksonville; his adopted granddaughter, Demetria (Andrew) Stafford of Decatur and her children, Jazmyn and Alexis Childress, and her grandson, Trey. He was also preceded in death by his longtime companion, Elizabeth Walters.
Mr. Howard was a 1953 graduate of Ottawa High School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. His family owned and operated Howard’s Cleaners in Jacksonville from 1956-1996. He was a member of the Jacksonville Elks Lodge and enjoyed power boat racing, horse racing and NASCAR. He especially loved his many pets, and will miss his daily walks with Ollie.
