Peter was born June 3, 1927 in Lancaster, MN to Fred and Kate Zahara. He grew up in Lancaster, attending local schools, then on July 2, 1945 he married Amy Snare in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Marines as a cook on the SS North Carolina. Peter was a hard working man who supported his family in many different occupations. He was a farm worker, truck driver, construction worker, a brakeman for Great Northern Railroad, and even a caretaker for Sunset Memorial Gardens. He drove truck for Rice Truck lines and Burlington Northern and was a business agent for the teamsters union for several years. Peter went to auctioneering school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and became an accomplished auctioneer for livestock, general merchandise and farming auctions.

Peter was a 4-H leader with the swine program. He loved his appaloosa horses, gardening and especially his family. He was an experienced cook and his specialty was everyone’s favorite: hand-turned BBQ chicken on a hand-made willow stick. He always made sure people and family had something to eat whenever they came over.

Peter struggled over the past few years with his health. He was a fighter and had a very strong will to survive. He was always there for his family.
