HUGHESPeter J. Hughes passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, April 15, 2022. He was a dedicated, amazing father and a beloved grandfather, great grandfather and friend.Peter is survived by his seven children Edward, Peter J. Jr, Ron, Stacey Hughes Kohlbrenner, Michael, Robert, and Megan Hughes Thomer, his 10 grandchildren Peter J. Hughes III, Olivia, Jeffrey, Stephen and CJ Kohlbrenner, Ryan, Sean, Nathan, Olivia, Kaleigh and Aiden, his great granddaughter Audrey Lane Hughes, and his son and daughter-in laws Christy, Matt, Brian, and especially Barbara, and 40 nieces and nephews.Peter was born on November 21,1932 in Drexel Hill to Francis and Katherine Hughes. He was the youngest of five children. In 1958 Peter married his childhood sweetheart Helen Toner and they had five children together. Sadly, Helen passed at a young age and Peter’s greatest and most cherished accomplishment was raising the five children by himself. Peter remarried years later and was blessed with two more children with Roberta 1960 Peter took a job in the specialty chemicals and flavors business. Despite not having a college education, and no experience in the industry, and five kids at home, Peter’s legendary will to achieve enabled him to advance from a sales rep to a majority owner in the company. Peter secured many Fortune 200 companies as clients including Coca Cola, Hershey Foods, Tropicana, General Mills, and Campbell’s. All of Peter’s clients considered him a respected friend and, even after retirement, kept in touch with him the rest of his life. When Peter retired, Coca Cola had a ceremony for him at their headquarters in which they inducted him into their partner hall of fame.Peter loved basketball, golf, fishing and later in life any other sport one of his grandsons was playing. Peter played basketball and football for Friends Central, he played basketball for his army base’s team when he served in the US Army for 2 years, he was a longtime member of Llanerch Golf Club where he won the club championship in 1963, and later was a charter member at Applebrook Golf Club.Family was always 99% of Peter’s life. Peter’s favorite sport was basketball and four of his grandsons played in high school. Over the years, Peter attended hundreds of his grandsons’ varsity high school basketball games, many high school baseball games and squash tournaments. He attended countless other t-ball, soccer, and grade school games. It was a huge part of his life and he was a passionate and some officials might say a slightly biased fan!Peter was very fortunate to have some of the best lifelong friends who were always there for him in good times and the not so good times. Many of them played sports with him as youngsters and their incredible friendships remained for life.Peter was a longtime parishioner at St. Dorothy’s in Drexel Hill and St Mary Magdalen’s in Media.Peter J. will be forever remembered and sorely missed by his family and friends but he has left them with many life gifts and special memories.
