Peter Dahlhauser, age 87, of Whittemore, died on Saturday January 12, 2013 at the West Bend Care Center. Peter Aloysius Dahlhauser was born on October 3, 1925 in Whittemore, Iowa, the eleventh child of Peter J. and Josephine (Elbert) Dahlhauser. He attended school in Whittemore, Mounds, LA and West Bend. He completed the ninth grade before deciding to help full time on the family farm. Most of his childhood was spent working on the family farm located 3 miles east of West Bend. He loved mechanical challenges. When he was a teenager, he thought he could stop a small gasoline engine by grabbing and holding a belt as it was running. A gallant effort was made but an accident ensued and broken bones had to be repaired. Peter went into the military in 1945. He served in the South Pacific as a mechanic in the Army. He helped his sister Jodie and their family establish roots in Arizona by working in cotton fields and doing irrigation work around Phoenix. He also helped another sister Helen and her husband run a resort in Wisconsin. He also helped his brother Paul by running a tiling machine in the West Bend area. He spent most of his working years as a well driller and plumber in the Whittemore area. He was a great fix-it man, jack of all trades. He liked fixing car engines as well as playing cards. Pete always had many unique food and health ideas and enjoyed sharing these ideas with friends and family. He lived in Whittemore until 2010 and then he became a resident of the West Bend Care Center. He passed away on January 12, 2013 at the age of 87. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore. Peter is survived by one sister, Josephine Stewart of Gilbert, AZ; two brothers, Arthur and his wife Peg of Nashville, TN and Marvin and his wife Bernie of East Moline, IL; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Dahlhauser of Des Moines. Also surviving are 65 nephews and nieces; over 200 great nephews and nieces; and a number of great great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul, Henry, Edward and James; and sisters, Agnes Waechter, Helen Joynt, Marie Mertz, Marguerite Montag and Angie Dearchs.
