Penny Smart, age 57, of Elkhart, died peacefully Tuesday, June 19, 2018 in the comfort of her family’s presence in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka.She was born May 17, 1961 in Niles, Michigan, the fourth daughter of Richard and Beatrice Matthews. She married Lyman Junior Smart May 12, 1988 in Cassopolis, Michigan.
He survives.Penny earned her Masters in Business Administration through Indiana Tech and was a Manager of Finance at Saint Joe Regional Medical Center.Penny will be greatly missed by family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of thirty years, Lyman Smart of Elkhart; two daughters, Carla (Rick) Lopez of Muskegon, Chele (Greg) Cline of Elkhart; two sons, Carl Gene Johnson, Jr. of Elkhart, Jerrell (Shawna) Long of Liberty, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Jordan Johnson, Beylyn “Ice Cream” Buck, Morgan Edwards, Julian Edwards, Miles Edwards, Madison Johnson, Nicolas “Miguel” Johnson, Lyman Long, Jr., Landon Long; four sisters, Bea (Andy Russell) Lee of Cassopolis, Ann Matthews of Cassopolis, Fay (Fredrick) Matthews-Bridges of Dallas, Texas, Joy (Anthony Milan) Poindexter of Elkhart. She has one Godson and oldest nephew, Petey Lee, and a host of other nieces and nephews.
She has one favorite cousin found through DNA, Michael Wilson.She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Carvell “CJ” Johnson.
