Remembering His Legacy
Payton R. Wells was born on June 24,1933, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the youngest son of Joseph and Mary Wells (Dooley). A life-long resident of Indiana, Payton was a tireless and astute businessman and a dedicated community servant.
Payton’s work ethic and personality were recognized at an early age. In grade school, he became a “teachers favorite” (as he would often say) a sentiment shared by those who knew him. He attended Indianapolis Public School 37 then later Indianapolis Public School 26. He matriculated to the acclaimed Crispus Attucks High School where many life long friendships were formed. Payton had ongoing studies at Butler University where he took Management and Business Administration courses; he also studied bookkeeping at Purdue University. Later, he continued his business education at Gulf Oil Corporation School of Management and General Motors School for Automotive and Management Training.
After high school, Payton joined the U.S.
