Paul K. Bloom, 91, of 73 Parkwood Place, died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Sycamore Manor.

Paul served as a Lycoming County Commissioner from 1968 to 1984. During his four terms as commissioner, the county built the new Court House, the county prison, opened the landfill and instituted the county wide emergency system.

Paul proudly served with the 4th Marine Division during World War II and was on Iwo Jima for 27 days in 1945. In 1995 he returned there with fellow Marines for the 50th anniversary of the invasion.

Paul was a lifelong member of New Covenant United Church of Christ (formerly St. Johns Reformed/U.C.C.) where he had served as an elder, on church council and the property committee. He was a 1937 graduate of Williamsport High School, a member of the Kiwanis, Salvation Army, John F. Laedlein Lodge #707 Free & Accepted Masons, American Legion Post 1, Duboistown Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Republican Club, Democratic Club, Zafar Grotto, Marine Corps League, and a life member of the Scottish Rite. Paul played fast pitch softball for many years and was a longtime manager and coach at Brandon Little League.

Paul served for many years on the Brandon Park Commission, the Shade Tree Commission and was instrumental in the founding of the Elm Park Softball Complex where he worked in the concession stand for many years.

Born December 7, 1919 in Williamsport, he was the son of Amandus and Jeanette Stahlnecker Bloom.

Surviving are a son, Kenneth P. (Karen) Bloom of Williamsport; a daughter, Patricia A. Mitsdarfer of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Scott A. Mitsdarfer and Brian P. (Vickie) Mitsdarfer, and Kevin P. (Stephanie) Bloom and Keith P. Bloom; great grandsons, Gavin S. P. Mitsdarfer, Benjamin P. Bloom and Baby Boy Bloom, due in May; nephews, Harlan (Pat) Byers, Wayne (Peggy) Miller and Robert Campbell; nieces, Dolores (Sam) Parisi, Susan Twigg and Cathy Campbell; numerous great nephews and nieces; and longtime friend, Maxine Loudenslager.

Paul was predeceased by his wife, the former Betty L. Sassaman; a brother, Harlan Bloom and sisters, Dorothy Bloom, Lelia Wingrove, Jeanette Byers and Eleanor Miller.
