Paul Calvin Newton II was born March 29, 1924 in Guilford County, son of the late Paul Calvin Newton I and Minnie Mills Newton. Paul grew up in Davidson County and received a B.S.
He was an insurance salesman for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and subsequently started a small independent insurance brokerage firm, then in High Point, NC he was a circulation manager for a weekly conservative newspaper and a salesman for International Correspondence Schools; and finally, near Asheboro, NC he became an agricultural implement salesman. Having Southern conservative political leanings, he was an avid campaigner for Barry Goldwater for President of the U.S. and I. Beverly Lake for Governor of NC as well as a member of the John Birch Society. His political connections enabled him to influence Senator Sam Irvin to nominate his son to the Air Force Academy. Religiously he eschewed the Southern Baptist Church as too liberal and was attracted to more evangelical congregations. He also enjoyed playing chess, and hunting game birds with pointing breeds, especially the Hungarian Vizsla and Irish Setter. He enjoyed and was good at attracting the interest of esoteric and engaging politically conservative thinkers.
Paul is survived by three children; son, Paul Calvin Newton, III and wife, Hongyan Zhang Newton of Seattle, WA, daughters Frances Newton Watson and husband, Johnny Philip Watson of Raleigh, NC, Jenny Newton Hosford and husband John William Hosford III of Waynesville, NC, grandchildren, Tamara Watson Adams (David), and Derek Watson (Jennifer), Roxanne Hosford- Ragland (John) Kristina Hosford, Cathryn Hosford Hansher (Zachary), five great-grandchildren; Mallory, Avery and Jonathan Adams, Dale and Lane Watson; brother, Francis Lanneau Newton of Chapel Hill, sister-in-law; Sunny Newton (wife of late brother John Garland Newton).
