Paul A. Smith of Bosque Farms, NM passed away peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2019, with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Carol, of 50 years; children Michelle Smith, Kristy Smith and April Smith; grandchildren Anthony Smith, Steven Copeland and Jeremy Smith; brother Neil Smith and wife Linda of Los Lunas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elizabeth Smith, sister Beatrice Bishop and brothers; Eric, Stuart, Graham, Keith, and Lawrence Smith. He joined the Army his senior year and served in Vietnam with the 808th Engineers.
When he returned from Vietnam, he worked for the State Highway department for several years. He then opened his own business J & B Radiators which he ran for 34 years until his heath forced him to retire and sell it.
Paul was a family man; he loved to take his girls boating and fishing, and on family vacations. He loved dirt track car races, and he was also a big NASCAR fan. His love of racing inspired him to race stock cars at Duke City Race Way and then he moved on to racing non-wing sprint cars. He was a member of the NMMRA for 26 years where he served as the President for two terms and also served on the board. His love of sports rubbed off on his daughters; Michelle raced cross-country motorcycles and Kristy raced sprint cars; he served as their mechanic and pit crew.
Paul will be known for his honesty, kindness, fairness, patience and always lending a helping hand to those in need. He deeply loved his family and friends and will be missed by all that knew him.
