Patricia Pat Butcher Richardson passed away October 6, 2009, at age 82, while at home here in Roswell with her son and his family. Pat was born in San Angelo, Texas on January 17, 1927, to Cary Preston Butcher and Carol Ashby Butcher. Pats first name was actually Carol, but she grew up being called Pat. Sadly, Pat lost her mother at age 9. Cary Butcher later married Clara Phinizy, and to them were born son Preston and daughter Clara, giving Pat a dearly loved younger brother and sister. Pat attended high school in Midland Texas, attending reunions up until the last few years. She attended college at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas. In early 2007 she moved for her health to Fort Myers, Florida, near her son and his family, but then returned to Roswell in November of 2008.
She married Randolph Randy M. Richardson, III, on February 14, 1953, who predeceased her in July of last year. By May of 1954, they established their home in Roswell; Randy then working for Humble Oil Company as a petroleum landman. Like many wives of that time, she stayed busy keeping a home, raising her children, and staying active in community projects and social activities. Assistance League, Garden Club, Petro Club, Dance Club, PEO, candy making at St. Andrews, and Birthday Club were just a few of what this son remembers. She enjoyed summer family camping and trout fishing in Colorado, and snow skiing in the winter. She also did her share of fall dove hunting, and cooked an outstanding batch of fried dove and biscuits for breakfast.
Pat and Randy built an addition to their East Grand Plains home and established Encanto Cattery in the 1970s. She loved breeding and raising blue point Siamese cats and together they attended many cat shows. After years of effort she was finally able to triple-grand champion one of her own cats. Pat loved animals, including box turtles in the garden and ground squirrels from Colorado; and an odd assortment of other critters brought in by the rest of the family. Throughout her life she enjoyed gardening, and often said she needed to do a little digging in the dirt. She enjoyed shopping nurseries for newly arrived plants and in latter years struggled to make orchids flower. She was also quite successful in Roswell in the home-showing of custom clothes. For more than decade she ran week-long shows four times a year.
PPat is survived by her two sons; Randolph M. Richardson, IV, and his wife Marta, and their four children: Mark, Carol, Randolph and Julia, all of Ft. Myers, Florida; son Michael S. Richardson and his wife Sharon Lombardi of Roswell, and Michaels children Elizabeth Kate Richardson and Michael Cary Richardson, both of Glendale, Arizona; a brother, C. Pre
