Pat Strause, 90, died April 24, 2021 of a heart ailment. Born to Olin Norris and Oma Morris Norris on October 25, 1930, in Indianola the family then moved to Ames. She attended school in Ames and graduated from Des Moines East High in 1948.
Upon graduation, she worked for A&P Grocery, then later after starting her family worked at Frye Manufacturing and Detrick Realty in Tulsa. Pat began working at age 17 and continued until she retired at age 74. Her hobbies included water-skiing, swimming, boating, bowling, bridge clubs with friends, line dancing, and singing at Urbandale Senior Center.
Pat married Jack Beghtol in 1950 and they raised six children during their 24-year marriage. They enjoyed their group of friends at Gray’s Lake as founding members of the Des Moines Ski Hawks. They planned yearly vacations with the kids and snow skied in Winter Park CO. In 1990, Pat married Gerald Strause. They were married 20 years and enjoyed square dancing, casinos, traveling and raising white German Shepherds. Jerry died in 2010 shortly after they returned to Des Moines.
Surviving Pat are two sisters – Sandy Fisher and Mardi Lawson (Butch). In addition, Pat’s children – Andrea & Fred Elms, Nancy & Gary Zinter, Lynn & Drew Cannon, Teresa Dayton (Jim -Deceased), John & Barb Beghtol, Janice & Jim Thoen, 18 grandchildren, over 20 great-grandchildren and step grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews and cousins.
Pat’s family would like to thank her friends and staff at Illahee Hills where Pat lived for the past 2 years.
