Pastor Thomas L. Martin

January 10, 1944 – July 28, 2010

PASTOR THOMAS L. MARTIN of Freeland, MI. Beloved husband, dad, papaw, son and brother passed away at home on July 28, 2010. Tom was born to Oliver and Grace Martin in Hamburg, AR on January 10, 1944. He graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in AR with a BA in 1966. He also attended Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. Tom married Sandra Wheatley on May 8, 1970 and recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Tom is survived by his children: Matt (Jennifer) Martin and Jamie (Brian) Johnson, and his grandchildren: Abigail Johnson, Alisha Martin, Katherine Johnson, Michael Martin and Isabelle Johnson. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and was very proud of them. Tom was called by God to preach when he was 16 and pastored his first church at age 17. Throughout his ministry he had the opportunity to pastor, plant churches, lead children’s and bus ministries and work with young people who still love and keep in touch with him. Beginning this month, he started his 24th year as the Commissioned Area Missionary for the Bay Area Baptist Association of the Southern Baptist Convention. He started churches and helped meet the needs of the SBC churches in an eight county area. Tom always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved photography and enjoyed capturing memories from behind the camera. He especially loved taking pictures of his grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Grace (Parker) Martin, three sisters: Joyce (Bernard) Blocker, Helen Robbins, Deannie (Kenneth) Johnson and one Brother Glen (Mary) Martin and sister-in-law Billie Martin. He was predeceased by his father Oliver, Brother Jimmy and brother-in-law LaVerne Robbins. He was a very important member of the Wheatley family and will be greatly missed.
