New Gloucester-Viola A. Macomber, 77, of New Gloucester passed away on Thursday, July 31 at the Hospice house with her family by her side.

She was born June 11, 1937 to August (Gus) and Alice Schwerdtfeger in Bath, Maine.

She was a graduate of New Gloucester High School. She married Bruce Macomber, Sr. in 1957 and they had four children Karen Marshall, Deana, Bruce Jr. (Janet) and John.

She traveled with her husband in the Air Force to Virginia, Hawaii, Maine and Ohio finally settling back in Maine next to her parents in New Gloucester.

Viola enjoyed staying home and raising her children. She went back to work once the youngest was in school and worked for the school system in Gray-New Gloucester for many years first in the Superintendent’s office and later as a special ed assistant. She enjoyed working with and getting to know those students especially and created very special bonds.

As much as she enjoyed her children and was always so proud of them she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and going to their sporting events and school activities. They always knew that she would be

there and usually with a treat especially chocolate chip cookies.

As well as leaving behind her husband and four children she leaves behind her grandchildren Meaghan Fortier (Ben), Jackson, Daniel and Ian Marshall and Campbell Macomber, great-granddaughter Isabelle and two step-great-grandchildren Kalib and Kaylee. She also leaves a very special cousin Ann Feeney and many more cousins, and in-laws.

She was predeceased by her parents, Gus and Alice, an infant brother, Paul and a half sister, Dorothy Conlon.

The family would like to extend its extreme appreciation to the ICU and staff at CMMC and especially all the staff at the Hospice House. You were all such a huge support to us and treated mom with such dignity.
