Velma Hulst-Gates, the daughter of Teckla (Brunell) and John Miovac was born on August 14, 1921 in Roseau County. She was the fourth of eleven children in her family. She attended country school through the eighth grade.
On October 25, 1938 she and Stanley Hulst were united in marriage. To this marriage 10 children were born. They lived in Birchdale for some time and then moved back to Donaldson. They then moved to Stafford Township where Stanley farmed, and in 1966 they began working at Polaris Industries in the fiberglass plant. In 1969 they moved to St. Hilaire, and were living there when Stanley passed away. He died on July 8, 1970 and Velma moved to Thief River Falls in the fall of 1970.
Velma later met Joe Gates in Thief River Falls in 1971. Joe had earlier purchased a farm in Wannaska, and in June of 1972 Velma moved to Wannaska with Joe. They were married on August 19, 1977 in South Dakota.
Velma and Joe moved to Salol where the built a new home, and lived there until moving to Roseau. Joe passed away on December 4, 2006. Velma still resided in their home in Roseau until her passing.
