Richard Nelson McCallum, 88, of Portland Maine, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, March 2, 2015. Born in Portland to Mary Ann (Jenny) Boudreau McCallum and George McCallum, he was one of 7 children and the last to survive: Leona (McCallum) Southard, Harry McCallum, Francis (McCallum) Walters, Barbara (McCallum) Perry, Shirley (McCallum) Jackson, and Rosemarie (McCallum) Bean.

He lived his life in Portland attended Portland’s Cavanaugh Grammar School and Portland High School.

Dick was a talented musician, and at a young age (in 1944 was awarded a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston MA. Instead of accepting that golden opportunity, he enlisted in the army and served in Europe like so many other young men during that time. He was proud of his service and often said without regret that “he would do it again in a heart beat.”

He married Helen Morotto of Portland after returning from the war and was a loving and devoted husband for 67 years. He became the proud father of three children, Dickie McCallum, of Portland, Mary McCallum of Lexington, MA, and George McCallum of Buxton, ME. He loved his daughters in law: Maureen McCallum, wife of Dickie McCallum and Laurie McCallum wife of George McCallum.

He is also survived by his Grandchildren Sarah Doyle and her husband Matt of Boca Raton FL, Leslie Hanna and her husband David of Orlando, Fl, Scott McCallum of Portland and Julie McCallum of Portland and his great grandchildren Ava and Jordana Doyle of Boca Raton Fl, and Kendall and Payton Hanna of Orlando, Fl; as well as his many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

In the end, it’s not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.
