Raymond John Peil, age 81 of Mt. Iron and formerly of Tower and Aurora died Friday, May 28, 2010 in St. Michael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. He was born July 9, 1928 in Tower, MN the son of John and Mintie (Kitto) Peil; and was a 1946 graduate of Tower-Soudan High School. Ray served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948 and during the Korean War. He married Carol June Langehaug on July 21, 1956 in Minneapolis and they made their home in Biwabik, Iron, Aurora, Lake Vermilion-Tower and in Mt. Iron. Ray was a long time employee of the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railroad; working as a telegrapher and later as a Depot Agent. He was a member of the Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post # 245 in Tower, the Old Settler’s Association, Tower Historical Society, the Lake Vermilion Sportsmen’s Club, and St. James Presbyterian Church in Tower. Ray was very active in Cub Scouting, volunteering at the Salvation Army, attending the Virginia and Aurora United Methodist Church, and he loved the Tower Fourth of July Celebrations. He was a kind man with a quick wit and a great sense of humor.
Raymond is survived by his wife: Carol; children: Rebecca (Robert) Schmitz of Chandler, AZ, Mark Peil of Maplewood, MN, and Susan (David) Blubaugh of Sumner, WA; grandchildren: Nicholas Schmitz and Arianna Blubaugh; sister: Pauline “Pauly” Housenga of Lake Vermilion; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter in infancy; and siblings: Gerri Burd and Richard “Jack” Peil.
