NEW BRIGHTON, MINNESOTA – Dolly (Olga) Marie Dalen Swanson, 90, of Brightondale Senior Community died at

 

Of Norwegian ancestry, Dolly was born 07 Jan 1925 in Perley, MN to Nicholai N. and Clara Amanda (Bjordahl) Dalen.  She married Gordon O. Swanson 11 May 1946 in Moorhead MN immediately after WWII.  Gordon died 14 Jan 1993 in Harlingen TX after 47 loving years of marriage. 

 

Dolly was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister Helen Dalen Huebsch, and by two brothers, Jarl (Jerry) Norman Dalen and Lyle Sanford Dalen.  A son, Thomas Oliver Swanson, died at age 19 months.

 

Surviving is a sister, Sylvia Dalen (Donald) Dedon of St. Paul MN.  Other survivors are a daughter Susan Ann Swanson (Mark) Sommars of Hopewell IL, daughter Becky Jean Swanson (Joseph) Kroll of New Brighton MN, and son Kim Allan Swanson of Dent MN. 

 

Also surviving are five grandchildren:  Joshua Kroll of Minneapolis MN, Mei Lin Kroll (Nak) Jung of New Brighton MN, Jenni Sullivan of Chillicothe IL, Sara Sullivan (Adam) Drummer of Oviedo FL, and Kristina Sommars Cadena of Chillicothe IL.  Nine great-grandchildren:  Emily, Ethan and Molly Prewitt and Bethany and Ricky Cadena of Chillicothe IL; Brady and Rachel Drummer of Oviedo FL; and Sophie and Elius Jung of New Brighton MN. 

 

Numerous other relatives survive, especially in Minneapolis and Fargo/Moorhead areas. 

 

Dolly and Gordon moved from Fargo ND to DeKalb and later Peoria IL from 1950 thru 1981.  They had a lake home on Big McDonald Lake until Gordon’s death in 1993.  Dolly then moved to Calvary Cooperative, Golden Valley MN, then in 2009 to Brightondale.  She was a devout Lutheran and belonged to Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria and later Calvary Lutheran in Golden Valley MN. 

 

Dolly was sweet and kind and loved by family and many friends.  She was frugal and loved to travel.  As a talented stitcher, she knitted hundred of hats, mittens and scarves over the years.  Even after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she was so proud that she could still knit children’s hats for charity, proud of still being useful.
