Ms. Johnnie Thompson, 89, transitioned on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at North Mississippi Medical Center, Tupelo, MS.
Johnnie Mae Thompson was born November 22, 1932 in Madison County, Pickens, Mississippi to the late Mr. Henry Chambers and Mrs. Flora Murry Chambers. She was the sixth child of seven children. In the late forties, she united with Bethel M.B. Church in Pickens, MS under the leadership of Reverend Ed Jackson. She began her early education at Bethel Elementary School in Pickens. She attended Cameron Street High School, Canton, MS and later transferred to Sacred Heart Catholic School, Camden, MS, where she graduated with honors. She always received many honor certificates from elementary to high school.
In the mid 1950’s, she relocated from MS to Gary, IN, where she met and married the love of her life, Mr. Garrett Thompson. To this union, eight children were born.
Johnny Mae was a friendly person and wanted to help everyone. She did not meet any strangers. When she was young, she made sure she did her homework assignments. While her siblings were busy doing the chores that she was supposed to be helping with, she would skip doing chores to do her homework. One thing for sure, she was quick on her feet. If someone would say, “Let’s go or come ride with me,” it did not take her long to get ready. She loved to talk and just have a good ole time and she did not hesitate to tell you what was on her mind.
Johnny Mae’s loving family members that preceded her in death were her mother and father, Henry and Flora Chambers, daughters; Jacqueline Thompson, Marsha Thompson, and Gail Thompson, brothers: John W. Chamber, step-brothers; Casey Chambers and Cornelius Chambers, sisters; Almetta Moore and Flora Jean Gerring, brothers-in-law; Enzie Moore, Sr. and Eddie Ware.
Johnny Mae leaves to cherish her memory three sons; Garrett (Cindy) Thompson, III of New Albany, MS, Gary Thompson and Johnny (Li, Tonya) Thompson both of Atlanta, GA, two daughters; Marthetia Thompson and Marleen Lewis both of New Albany, MS, one sister; Arista Ware and brother-in-law; Rudy Gerrring, twenty grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
