Mildred Jaros, the daughter of Myrtle Marian (Walker) and Elmer Cook was born on May 12, 1923 in Fort Riley, Kansas. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Kaimuki.
Mildred was an Army officer’s daughter and was living 10 miles away from Pearl Harbor when Pearl Harbor was attacked. She was working at the planning commission at Fort Shafter at the time. Following the attack she and her family were sent to Oakland, California on the Matson Line Army Ship.
On August 3, 1944 she and James Jaros were united in marriage. James served in the U.S. Army through WWII, and he and Mildred remained in California until the war ended.
In 1946, Jim and Mildred moved to Warroad where they opened a dry cleaning business which they operated until 1979. Mildred also worked as a bookkeeper for three area doctors, and at Thermolite Glass. Jim and Mildred managed the Warroad Arena Concession stand for twenty-five years. Mildred was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Fireman’s Association, the Legion Auxiliary, and served as an officer for their bowling league.
Jim and Mildred spent their summers at their resort home on Oak Island at the Northwest Angle. They both enjoyed helping out at Bonnie Brae Resort when needed. Mildred and Jim did a lot of fishing while at the Angle and enjoyed their time there very much.
Mildred Jaros passed away on Thursday, June 14 at the Warroad Care Center. She was 84 years old.
Mildred is survived by her husband James Jaros of Warroad, her son James (Mary) Jaros of Warroad, and two grandchildren James John Jaros, and Holly (John) Shilling. She is preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Hazel Marian Clark, Gladys Lorraine Cook, Claude Donald Cook, Helen Maxine Cook, and Maurice Elmer “Buster” Cook.
