Melvin was born on August 26, 1928 to Tina (Nelson) and Garhart Hanson in Greenbush, MN. He was raised in the Srathcona Area and married Bonnie Sumner on August 27, 1948. To this marriage six children were born, Stuart, Craig, Steven, Peggy, Patti, and Phyllis.
Melvin farmed and worked several construction jobs until the family moved to Warren, MN in 1968. He worked for the MN Department of Transportation in Marshall County until 1984 when he and Bonnie moved to Roseau. Melvin then continued his work for the DOT in Roseau County until he retired in 1991. He worked a total of 23 years for the DOT.
Melvin and Bonnie’s main joy in life was creating music and playing the guitar. They, along with many other family members spent many years glorifying God by performing in various churches and community events throughout the area. He enjoyed doing yard work and other projects around the house.
