Portland – Marie R. Valente Vacchiano Maiorino, 92, a resident of the St. Joseph’s Residence and Rehabilitation, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2013. She was born in South Portland on March 24, 1921, the daughter of Michael A. and Madeline (Villacci) Valente.
Marie was a remarkable woman who was ahead of her time. She accomplished much and did not shy away from any challenge. Marie graduated from Portland High School in 1938. Following her graduation at the age of 18, she worked in various positions for the US Government Civil Service in Washington, DC and in New York City, including the time during World War II. She was subsequently appointed secretary to the Chief Medical Officer at the Veteran’s Administration in Portland.
Marie later married Milo Vacchiano, and the couple owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Westbrook. The store earned the recognition as one of the top six stores in the country and help launch her business career. Following Milo’s death she met and married Blasé (Ray) Maiorino. They operated the first Baskin Robbins in Maine, which was located at Northgate in Portland.
Marie enjoyed traveling. Later, she purchased a home at the Villages in Florida, which she truly loved. The most important part of her life was her family. She looked forward to the holidays or any special occasions where she could be surrounded by her family. Marie also enjoyed quiet times; like soaking up the sun in the back yard of her sister’s home or going for that banana split with her brother-in – law.
For many years Marie was a communicant and volunteer at Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth. She also volunteered at the Diabetes Unit at the Maine Medical Center. She remained active as a resident of St. Joseph’s, where she initiated a recycling program for the facility.
Marie is predeceased by her parents; and her husbands Milo and Ray. She is also predeceased by her brothers, Ralph Valente, Thomas Valente and Michael Valente.
Marie is survived by her beloved sister Rose (Valente) Carter, Rose’s husband Richard and their children to whom she was especially devoted and several other treasured family members. She is also survived by her two step-sons, Pasqulae (Pat) Maiorino, his wife Donna, a cherished granddaughter, Gina; Frank Maiorino, his wife Brenda, and their children.
The family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Wasserman and the staff at the Southern Maine Dialysis; Dr Kazilionis, Father Bert Poussard, and the Nurses and CNA’s at the St. Joseph’s Residence who she loved dearly.
