Margaret Bartels, 96, formerly of Stephen, MN, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1, 2015, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.

Margaret Violet was born on March 10, 1919, in Ryder, ND, to George and Johanna (Gustafson) Simonson. As a young girl, she lived in several small towns in western North Dakota including, Ryder, Douglas, Roseglen, Raub, and Parshall, before settling in Stephen, MN. As a young woman, Margaret was a member of the Stephen High School Girls Glee Club, Luther League, and she attended Mount Carmel Bible Institute.

On June 24, 1948, Margaret was united in marriage to William G. Bartels on her family farm. The young couple made their home in Stephen and raised their family. She held several jobs over the years in addition to be a homemaker, including working for Simplot, Fields Fashion, and as a nanny. Margaret was also active in the Ladies Auxiliary, Bible Study, and First Lutheran Ladies Aide.

In 2003, Margaret moved to Eventide, a senior living community, to receive nursing care and to be nearer to family.

She is survived by her children, William Jr. (Edith) Bartels, of Moorhead, Wayne Bartels of Virginia, MN, and Marilyn (Richard) Smart of East Grand Forks, MN; her seven grandchildren, Aaron Bartels, Cory (Amy) Bartels, Ryan (Joni) Bartels, Gretchen (Brent) Johnson, Stephanie (Jeremiah) Roberson, Trent (Lisa) Smart and Lucas Smart; thirteen great-grandchildren; brother, Luther Simonson, Dalbo, MN; sister-in-law, Wilma Simonson of Dewitt, IA; and brother-in-law, DelRoy Lieberg of Clarksville, OH.

In addition to her husband, William Sr., who passed away on September 21, 1978, Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Gerhard, Einar, Loretta (Walter) Rud, Eleanor (Ralph) Mickelson, and Jeanette Lieberg.

The family wishes to thank all those who cared for her at Eventide over the years.
