Vorpahl Lucian Gerald was born June 30, 1911 and was called to Heaven on January 13, 2015 at the age of 103.  Lu was a life-long Minneapolis resident and ardent Gopher fan.  He graduated from Edison High School in 1929 where he met his soul mate, Genevieve Brede, whom he married in 1936.  They spent 64 wonderful years together until her death in 2000.  Lu attended the University of Minnesota where he played football for the legendary Bernie Bierman. He was a member of the University of Minnesota’s first civil engineering graduating class in 1933. After finishing his ROTC, he enlisted in the Army Corp of Engineers as a Second Lieutenant.  When the U.S. entered WWII, Lu shipped off to the Pacific theater to build roads, bridges, hospitals and airfields.  By war’s end he was Lt. Colonel and recipient of the Bronze Star.  After the war he became regional manager of W.H. Barber Oil Company, retiring in 1976.
