Linda “Kay” Newman McBroom, lovingly known to her grandchildren as Mimi and to friends as Sunshine was called home on Sunday, August 14, 2022, at 82 years old. Kay was born on October 5, 1939, in Centreville, MS.

She graduated from Centreville High School in 1957 as the Valedictorian. She then graduated from the University for Women in 1960 with a degree in microbiology/chemistry. She went on to be a medical technologist at UM Medical School at the University of MS. She received her Master’s Degree in Microbiology in 1965 at the University of Alabama. She served as the Head of Hematology at University MS Medical Center and at Druid City Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL. She also received the highest grade in the nation on the national certifying boards of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She had a brilliant mind but despite all of her academic accomplishments her proudest accomplishments were her children and grandchildren.

She lived an extraordinary life and was married to Dr. Robert (“Bobby”) McBroom for 39 years and they had a love and bond that could never be broken. They did everything together, including hunting and fishing and even formed a women’s softball team called, Doc’s Dolls. Everyone that knew her knew she loved sports, especially football and her team, Ole Miss. She was also a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry and the Diocesan Standing Committee. She also worked tirelessly with the church’s Outreach Program for many years. She was also a licensed Eucharistic Minister, licensed Lay Reader and Verger at St. John’s.

Kay is preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Laird Newman, her father, Harold R. Newman, her devoted husband, Dr. Robert (“Bobby”) McBroom and her furry companion, Lulu.

She is survived by her loving children, James Leighton McBroom (Donna) and Layna Kay McBroom, her precious grandchildren, Laken Alayna McBroom, Taylor Layne Tillman and Gracie Kay Tillman, her brothers, Harold (“Brother”) R. Newman, Jr., John Newman and Richard Newman, a niece and several nephews and many close friends. She was best known for her beautiful soul both inside and out. She made her family proud with her zest for life, devotion to family and friends, steadfast faith and an undeniable strength. It was her wish to help others and she ensured that wish would continue even after her passing.
