Obituary
James Edward Eden, a resident of Innsbrook, died peacefully at home on Sunday morning, November 25, 2018. He spent Thanksgiving Day with Carolyn, his wife of 33 years, and his sons Stan (Leanne) Eden and John (Kelly) Eden both of Labadie, MO. In his final months, he was surrounded by family and many lifelong friends. He was 81. Born on March 20, 1937 to John and Maude (nee Ragsdale) Eden in Bonne Terre, Missouri, Jim was the youngest of six children. His father worked in the lead mines as a carpenter, and the family lived on a working farm outside of Esther, Missouri. Jim was active in athletics, graduating from Esther High School in 1955. He married Donna Hutson on June 9, 1956 and with their sons moved from the Lead Belt to Ellisville in St. Louis County in 1962. Jim worked as a printer and compositor for several newspapers, including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and later for Garlich Printing as an account representative. The young family enjoyed camping vacations to Colorado and to many of Missouri’s lakes and rivers. Jim was an avid hunter and an even more avid fisherman, and he was an early supporter of the Missouri Department of Conservation. Jim and Carolyn Smart were married on May 1, 1985. After his retirement from the printing business, Jim maintained his real estate license for many years. Jim and Carolyn loved spending family time outdoors, tennis, golf, hiking and traveling with friends to winter destinations in the southern states. They were also regular visitors to California while Stan resided there. Jim maintained regular contact with several of his childhood and professional friends over the years. Jim and Carolyn also hosted their yearly fish fries with his annual catch from his many fishing excursions. Jim and Carolyn settled full-time in Innsbrook in 2016, after having a vacation chalet there since 2000. In addition to his wife and sons, Jim is survived by one sister, Ruth Mustaine of Springfield, Missouri; ex-wife Donna Eden Southern of Scottsdale, Arizona; granddaughters Ashley Smith of Arlington, Virginia, Courtney Eden of Plymouth, Michigan, and Amy Uptergrove of Mascoutah, Illinois; great-granddaughters Abigail, Emma, Isabelle, Olivia and Sophia Uptergove, and many nieces and nephews including Keith Tenney of Foristell. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Christine Dees, Glenda Cory, Wanda Rea and Mary Groman. A Celebration of A Life Well Lived reception will be held Sunday, December 2, at 10:00 am to1:00 pm at the Innsbrook Clubhouse, Innsbrook, Missouri.
