Jewel Coco Rowell, age 72, of Pascagoula passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022. She was born November 6, 1949 in New Orleans and graduated from Fortier High School in New Orleans in 1966 at the age of 16.  She attended Southeastern ​Louisiana College in Hammond, LA, Pearl River Community College and received her Bachelor’s of Education from ​the University of Southern Mississippi. At the age of 22, she began teaching at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pascagoula, Magnolia Junior High in Moss Point, Pascagoula Junior High, and Trent Lott Middle School. Jewel devoted her time to her students by volunteering after school hours to tutor and encourage them.  In 2005, she retired after teaching for over 45 years. Jewel was a member of Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Pascagoula. She was ​a member of​the ​B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #1120 Ladies Auxiliary in Pascagoula ​for over 25 years where she served​in several positions and committees.

Jewel loved attending concerts ​at the casinos with her daughter,​Mardi Gras, arts & crafts,​cooking, and always had her own unique way of making others feel special and loved.  She was proud to share her carnival ball knowledge from her childhood within her community. She volunteered at Lynn Meadows, Pascagoula Dixie Youth Baseball as fundraiser coordinator for over 15 years, and enjoyed hosting exchange students from Germany.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jules Albert Coco and Violetta Dorothea Logan Coco; son, Robert “Matt​hew” Rowell; two infant children; sister, Mai Rose Galiouras; brother, Jules Logan Coco; half-sisters, Margaret Lyles and Kris Hazlett (Wayne); nephew, Joshua Ward; very special long-time friend, Linda Guess.

Jewel is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Robert “Bobby” Rowell, of Pascagoula; daughter she adored, Melanie Rowell, of Brentwood, TN; devoted caretaker of 8 years, David “Dada” Urias, Pascagoula; her fur babies, Cannoli “Noli” and Baby Girl; sister, Debi Coco; nieces, Wendy Hazlett, Patti Ward, Tierney Wisniewski; nephews, Barry Hazlett; Tony, Jules, Alex, Mario, and Nick Galiouras; great nephew, Christopher Hazlett; other nieces and nephews and family members.  Very special longtime friends, Aderia “Coco” Davis, Ellen Cl​ick, Dr. Matt Kuluz, Jeanne Allred, William Harkey & family, Pam Schock, Shirley Hunter, Sharon Ladner and Carlton Brewer; many other friends that she loved and considered her own.
