Cumberland-Isabell Riordan Miller, 87, of Cumberland passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Friday, January 30, 2015. Isabell was born in Thorne’s Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada on February 19,1927. She was the daughter of Harold and Cora (Longmire) Riordan. She was married to Gerald N. Miller of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia at Port Wade on June 20, 1953. She attended school in Annapolis Royal and went on to attend and graduate from Yarmouth Regional Hospital School of Nursing in Nova Scotia. Isabell furthered her studies in Toronto and Montreal and eventually became supervisor of five operating rooms and a teacher of student nurses at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. The Millers moved to Bar Harbor in 1964 and Isabell continued her nursing at the Mount Desert Island Hospital. After retiring from nursing she moved with her family to Cumberland, Maine in 1979.

Isabell was a competitive bowler in earlier years. She was also an avid card player and her grandchildren fondly remember hours of playing cards with suspicions that she let them win. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and the occasional upholstery project. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church.

Isabell is survived by husband, Gerald N. Miller of Cumberland, daughter Lynn Young and husband Bill, of North Yarmouth, granddaughters Laura and Leah, daughter Peggy Richardson, and husband Peter, of Bar Harbor, grandchildren Kelsey and Joseph; sister Phyllis Littlewood of Granville Ferry, NS, sister Betty Bent of Middleton, NS and many nieces and nephews.

Isabell was particularly proud of her Irish heritage and the following poem was her favorite.

   An Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be always at your back,

May the sun shine warm on your face,

And rains fall soft upon your field,

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
