Obituary for Herbert Lawrence Gillam

Herbert “Herb” Lawrence Gillam of Steelville, Missouri passed away Tuesday,  November 12, 2013 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 2 days. He was born in Ishmael, Missouri on February 10, 1930 to Floyd L. Gillam and Lonnie Brakefield Gillam. On August 31, 1951 in Potosi, Mo, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Carl.


In 1951, he and Rosemary moved to St. Louis and after a few months, Herb went into the U.S. Marine Corp. After serving his country honorably, he was discharged in 1953. Herb worked for several years at Mayrose/Swift Meat Packing Co. in St. Louis. In 1967 he moved his family to Czar Tower and went to work at St. Joe Lead Co. for 17 years. Herb also worked at the YMCA Camp near Potosi and helped build the Lodge. He later worked at Brown Shoe Co. in Steelville where he finally retired in 1994 for good.


Herb was very active in the Lookout Assembly of God Church in Viburnum. He and his wife enjoyed raising big, beautiful gardens and always shared their vegetables with family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, searching for mushrooms and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.. Most of all he enjoyed and loved being with all of his family.


He will be sadly missed by his wife of sixty-two years, Rosemary Gillam of Steelville, MO; five children, Joyce Chandler and husband Larry of East End, MO, James Gillam of Rolla, MO, Kathy Snyder and husband Michael of Davisville, MO, Joseph Gillam and wife Donna of Farmington, MO and Donna Asher and husband Edward of Davisville, MO; one brother, Marvin Gillam and wife Emily of Davisville, MO; one sister, Ardell Welzbacher of Serento, IL; brothers in-law, Bob Schlake of Doniphan, MO, Richard Carl and wife Nancy of Cuba, MO, Aaron Carl of Courtois, MO and  William Carl and wife Sharon of Oates, MO; sisters in-law, Patsy Carl of Kansas City,  MO, Betty Johnson of Viburnum, MO, Judy Prater and husband Bill of Redford, MO, Mariam Smith and husband Gene of Oates, MO, Lynn Chandler and husband Ronnie of East End, MO and Phyllis Bolin and husband Gene of Nixa, MO; seventeen grandchildren, Brian Chandler, Eric Chandler, Rev. Jared Gillam and wife Mindy, Sarah Hoover and husband Jamie, Abby O’Neail and husband Josh, Wesley Gillam, Bradley Gillam and wife Tammy, Cody Gillam and wife Patrease, Joey Gillam and wife Brittany, Jacob Gillam, Niki Lees and husband Derek, Brent Snyder, Brock Snyder and wife Tasha, Katy Bethann Snyder, Jennifer Housewright and husband Rob, Kristi Faughn and husband Ben and Jeremy Asher and companion, Kendra; 24 great-grandchildren;  nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer Gillam and wife Betty and Paul Gillam and wife Virginia; two sisters, Oneta Schlake, Rosealee Stulce and husband Fred; brothers in-law, Paul Welzbacher, Gilbert Carl and Charles Carl; one grandson, Clinton Lee; and one great-grandson, Ashton O’Neail.


The Family received friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.


Honored to be casket bearers were Brian Chandler, Brent Snyder, Cody Gillam, Wesley Gillam, Jeremy Asher, Eric Chandler, Brock Snyder and Joey Gillam. Honorary casket bearers were Eric Ray, Jacob Gillam, Niki Lees, Sarah Hoover, Abby O’Neail, Jennifer Housewright, Kristi Faughn and Katy Snyder.
