Garfield Owens, Sr., was born February 16, 1934, in Lafayette County, MS to the late James and Addie Owens. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined North Hopewell Church in Taylor, MS where he remained a faithful member until God called him home.
He was united in holy matrimony to Fronnie Phillips and to this union 5 children were born. He worked as a janitor for Layette school for 28 years where he retired. Mr. Owens was a hard worker who took pride in working with his hands. He instilled that same pride in his children. He was a farmer, gardener, hunter, fisherman, and mechanic all rolled in one. He still managed time to spend with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren teaching work ethic, life lessons, and the love of GOD, church, and family.
On Monday August 1, 2022, at 3:57 pm he was called home and peacefully transitioned home to be with the Lord.
Garfield is preceded in death by his parents, Six brothers: Roosevelt Owens, Artha Owens, Ulysses Owens, Robert Owens, James Owens, Cooper Owens; Eight sisters: Olivia Eggerson, Teter Brown, Tiny Fondren, Lena Booker, Dena Strickland, Icoria woods, Ora Eggerson, and Martha Smith.
He leaves behind five children: Three sons: Jimmie Owens (Gracie) of Taylor, MS, Garfield Owens Jr. (Sonquanetta) of Taylor MS, Clifford Owens of Taylor, MS; Two daughters: Mable Bell and Annette Vaughn, both of Taylor, MS; Seven grandchildren Jasmine Owens, Johnathan Owens, Lesley Owens, Devon Jones, Michael Bell, Alexis Hemphill, Allison Bell, One sister: Leonia Hairston of Flint, Michigan, and three great grandchildren: Hatalie Booker, Kayden Hemphill, Magnolia Owens, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
