Florence Allan Asselmeyer, 103, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013 surrounded by loving family. Florence was a caring, loving and devoted Mother and homemaker, who always shared her heart and home. Florence was born on Nov. 20, 1909 in Kearney, NJ, the daughter of Andrew & Mary MacRae Allan, who had both recently immigrated from Scotland. She married John A. Asselmeyer in 1936 and enjoyed over 50 years of married life in Rutherford, NJ and Whiting, NJ, eventually moving to Maine to live with family. She spent her last year living an active life at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. Florence was a member of the Eastern Star and Daughters of America for over 50 years, and was very active in many bridge clubs and social clubs throughout her life. She was a longtime member of the Rutherford Congregational Church and a founder of the Whiting United Methodist Church. She volunteered her time freely to many organizations, and each November was a poll worker at her local precinct. As a young woman, Florence loved music and dance. She was chosen to be one of the original Radio City Rockettes, but to her great disappointment her father told her that nice girls did not join chorus lines. She took that in stride and instead taught dance and piano before her marriage. During her lifetime she was always ready for fun and adventure, whether taking her children to the shore or mountains for vacations, taking a cruise with her friends, or at age 90, fulfilling her lifelong dream of a trip to Scotland. She enjoyed playing the slots in Atlantic City and spent her 100th birthday at Hollywood Slots in Bangor with friends. Florence was a great friend to all she knew, never missing a birthday or anniversary without sending a card. She enjoyed every party she ever attended, especially those that ended with cake and a cup of tea. Her enthusiasm for life, fun loving nature and loving spirit will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and David Karcher of Arapahoe, NC; son and daughter-in-law, John and Barbara Allan of Pemaquid; grandchildren, Eric Peal of Port Jervis, NY, Corey Allan of Damariscotta, Josh Allan and wife Kristen of Newcastle, and Emily Allan Kutch and husband Nick of Newcastle; great-grandchildren Robert Peal, Caroline and Ellie Allan, and Alice and Grace Kutch; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews in New Jersey and the on the West Coast.
