Westbrook – Emily Merrill Golden, 91, died at her home in Westbrook Sunday, March 24, 2013. Born November 1, 1921, she was daughter to Bartley Francis Welch and Katherine Malena Merrill Welch and sister to Charles Welch. Orphaned as children, Emily was adopted by Ralph G. and Myrtle L. Oakes while her brother was adopted by the Toner family in a neighboring town. Emily grew to be an accomplished musician and valedictorian of her Freeport High School class. She attended University of Maine at Orono for two years before graduating as an RN from New England Deaconess School of Nursing in Boston.
She married US Naval Officer Richard Marsh Golden of New Jersey during WWII and they became the parents of three daughters. Lt. (jg) Golden perished in service to his country November 9, 1949. While raising their children, Emily worked as an RN, primarily for the VNA of Portland. Continuing to work throughout, she later completed her BS at USM before joining the social work staff at MMC Outpatient Mental Health Clinic. During her retirement she traveled with friends and family and enjoyed neighbors, gardening, her cats, picnics, puzzles, reading, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by daughter Emily and son-in-law Merrill Morris of New Port Richey, FL, daughter Marguerite Merrill of Westbrook, daughter Marion Golden of Portland, granddaughter Julia Tebbets of Sewickley, PA, grandson Seth Burch and wife Laura Ringelheim and great grandchildren Jackson and Elizabeth Burch of NYC.
