DORIS MARJORIE GEHRLS HOPER

Doris Hoper passed into the presence of her beloved Lord on June 12, 2009, surrounded by her family.

Doris was born in Warren, Minnesota on August 16, 1937 to the late Clarice and John Joachim Gehrls. She spent her childhood in Warren and attended the University of North Dakota. Following her education, she lived in New York City for several years before returning to Warren, where she worked as a legal secretary.

On June 24, 1978, Doris married Gary Hoper, who would be her husband and best friend for the next 31 years. Doris and Gary owned a farm in Stephen where they were members of the First Lutheran Church. She spent her married life doing the things she loved — raising her three children, working on the farm, tending her garden, and documenting her family history in We Are Family, a book she co-authored. Doris and Gary retired in 2008, and she spent the past year remodeling their new home in Stephen and spoiling her grandchildren.

Doris leaves her devoted husband to cherish her memory, and lives through her children and their spouses: Mark Nelson (Stephanie) of Dallas, TX; Marla Nickson (Phil) of Minneapolis, MN; and Jerome Hoper of Stephen. Doris is also survived by her grandchildren, whom she dearly loved: Benjamin and Steven Nickson, Alex and Beckett Nelson, and Charlee Vancamp, as well as her sister Shirley Erickson (Gale) of Hoople, ND. She is predeceased by her sister Beatrice Adam (Duane) of Reynolds, ND.

Doris was the best wife, mother, and grandmother the world has ever known, and she will be dearly missed. She inspired and taught her children, through her example, to live fulfilling, Christian lives. She left the world a better place through her devoted and never-ending love, selflessness, and many simple acts of kindness.
