A lifelong hard-worker, he started his career as a paperboy at the Clarion Ledger/Jackson Daily News and was a contract truck driver and construction worker for several years. He was a foreman during construction of the Jackson Coliseum, the Rex Brown Power and Light Plant, and the VA Hospital before becoming the assistant manager for the Jackson Coliseum for a short time. He retired from United Insurance Company of America in 1984 before returning to work for the Clarion Ledger where he remained until he retired after working for more than 50 years.

His faith in Jesus was the most important thing to him. He was saved at a Billy Graham Crusade in Jackson, MS when he was 18. This is when Bobby began his lifelong, faithful Christian walk. He was baptized at Crestwood Baptist Church in Jackson, MS and was a member of Boling Street Methodist Church and instrumental in starting the First Independent Methodist Church in Jackson, MS before moving to Cato Baptist Church in 1971 where he has served faithfully until the time of his death. He passionately loved Jesus, telling others about Jesus, and telling the story of Jesus when the family gathered around for Sunday lunch and at Christmas. After passing away peacefully of a ruptured aneurysm, he is now in the presence of Jesus.
