Beulah I. Higbee

Ionia

Age 103, passed away May 12, 2006. Beulah Irene Higbee was born December 3, 1902 in Lyons, Michigan, the daughter of Minnie (Foote) and W. Sherman Keefer. She graduated from Portland High School in 1920, having had classes held in the Congregational Church because the school had burned. She had many stories to tell of growing up on a farm in the early 20th century and adapted well from driving a horse and buggy to school or sometimes catching the train at Collins, to learning to drive a car and using other modern conveniences as they became available. Beulah graduated from a teacher training school in Kalamazoo and taught at the Gibbs school and the Grove school (now known as the Haynor school).

In 1925 she married Charles F. Higbee of Ionia and they farmed the family farm in Ronald Township for more than 40 years. After his retirement, they moved into the city of Ionia. He passed away in 1989. Beulah was also predeceased by her two sisters, Lucile (Walter) Yeomans and Florence (Clarence) Yuchartz, and her parents, including her stepmother, Myrtie (Patrick) Keefer.

Beulah was a member of the Pleasant Hill Literary Society and the Farm Bureau Women’s Group. A skilled needle worker, her family has many keepsakes of her sewing, knitting, crocheting and tatting. She was a 4-H sewing leader for many years.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Edwin) Moore of Indian River and Elinor (William) Weisgerber of Ionia, 6 grand children, 7 great-grandchildren and 4 step great-grandchildren.
