Obituary
Anita M. Mallinckrodt, PhD, Augusta community activist, Town Historian, and history writer, passed on January 7, 2019. She was 89 years old. The daughter of Hubert W. and Olga Brggemann Mallinckrodt, Anita Mallinckrodt graduated from Augusta High School in 1947 and the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1951. She later undertook graduate work in the East, receiving an MA in International Communications and a PhD in Political Science from George Washington University, Washington, DC. Following 1950’s journalism work in Jefferson City and St. Louis, Anita spent the next decade living in Washington, DC, working as a writer in the Department of State and the U.S. Information Agency. In the 1970’s she went to Cologne in the Federal Republic of Germany to work free lance in the field of political communication. Until 1992 that included international shortwave radio work for the Deutsche Welle, teaching German politics to U.S. exchange students abroad, and researching/publishing numerous books about East Germany. Mallinckrodt also periodically taught political science in Washington, DC, at George Washington and American Universities. Anita Mallinckrodt was also widely known as a regional history writer, specializing in Missouri’s German immigration. In 1994 she published her award-winning study “From Knights to Pioneers”, the story of her immigrant forefathers and their countrymen who pioneered many of Augusta and St. Charles County’s early achievements. Locally, Mallinckrodt edited the bi-monthly Augusta Neighborhood News for many years (1992-2009) was active in the Friends of Historic Augusta and the Augusta Historical Museum, taught historical research/writing and made her home “Haus Dortmund” the center for ongoing family gatherings. In 1998 the Augusta Town Board honored Mallinckrodt for outstanding community service in publishing Augusta’s newspaper, and in 2001 it made her its Honorary Historian. Anita is survived by her brother Hubert E. Mallinckrodt and wife Ellen of Augusta, niece and nephews, and numerous American and European cousins, and friends. Memorials may be made to the historical society of your choice. Private burial in Augusta with a public memorial service to be held at a later date.
