Alan Rodney Tabor, Age 71, passed away April 15, 2020, at St Cloud VA Hospital 51-1 due to complications with Pneumonia.
Alan was born in Minneapolis Minnesota on June 23, 1948; the first of 3 boys to Arnold and Joyce Tabor. Although he was born in Minneapolis, he spent lots of time with family in Austin, Minnesota. He had a great friendship with aunt Opal during both tours in Vietnam; they were pen pals and she was his light when he thought all he could see was dark. Opal and uncle Henry (both deceased) saved his money so he was able to buy a car and a home upon his return from his second tour in Vietnam.
Alan was in Vietnam; a Marine, two time purple heart, 5-star gun man, and teacher for the reserves. At the age of 71 he told his story to the Monticello Tribune. PTSD from being a POW and for 40 yrs being lost in the VA system. Fourteen days before his story was told, 12 yrs working with numerous parts of the government Wright County Veteran found the glitch, he was a part of the purple hearts club that no longer existed. Most purple heart men had passed away or been relocated to the American Legion or VFW. This is were he and his family found peace.
Alan loved living at Washington Place where his family found him 12 yrs ago (around 2007) in the loving family of Todd and Kay Nouis. They open this school to house Veterans this is where Alan found hope faith a reason to live. He enjoyed playing cards with friends, trips to the store once a week, the casino, going out to eat, walks to lake George and loving a BLT sandwich from Sue when he just didn’t like what they were serving for dinner. Kay Nouis was a mother to him taking care of his wounds when he would find himself hurt just from a nights sleep of PTSD. Todd Nouis was the father he never had taking him to Dr.
Alan’s struggle with PTSD, seizures(epilepsy) and on set Dementia was given 2 weeks to live due to hip surgery that led him to a wheelchair permanently. He quit smoking and lived for one month shy of 2 yrs. Neurologists were amazed how he was able to find what works in the brain. He held on to family and friends at the VA that kept him alive. Making bird houses, painting pictures, and meeting young vets he could relate to.
He is proceeded in death by parents, Arnold and Joyce Tabor; brothers Calvin and Garvin Tabor; nephew, Ricky Tabor; and Roxanne Schumann (ex wife and mother of children).
Survived by son, David Schumann; daughters, Roberta Schumann (twin of David) and Ruth Shaddrick; grandchildren, Timäthy Schumann, Matthew Oman, Mark Anderson (now deceased); niece; Elise Tabor ; and nephew, Caleb Tabor.
Alan will be deeply missed, RIP
