Gustav Adolph Lindgren of Roseau, and formerly of Salol, died on March 26, 2007 at the Sheltering Oaks Manor. Adolph, as he was more widely known, was born the fourth child and second son of Swedish immigrants, August Lindgren and Olga Danielson-Lindgren on January 3, 1917 in Salol, MN.
Adolph attended public school in Salol and was a life-long member of Norland Free Lutheran Church in Salol where his parents were founding members. He was a member of the crew that moved the current Norland Church structure from Pencer to its present location in Salol some 75 years ago.
In his early years, Adolph worked in logging camps being paid “by the stick.” He had many stories he told of his logging days one of which was how one winter someone posted a thermometer in the camp curtailing the production because when the men saw how cold the temperature really was, they would head back inside. The logging camp boss promptly removed the thermometer so the men would not be so well informed as to the extreme of the elements. Production once again improved.
While continuing to cut timber, Adolph made the down payment on a quarter section of land in Section 7, Lake Township during 1943. He cleared that land as a beginning of his farm and added to it as time, money and availability of additional acreage permitted. His farm was within sight of the family farm where he lived in his youth. Until 1996, he continued actively farming by day and was employed at different times by Marvin Windows in Warroad and Polaris Industries in Roseau by night.
He served 10 years as Lake Township Supervisor, contracted with the county to build bridges with Ralph Karlsen, served on various church, township and county committees throughout his years and as a member of various cooperatives and organizations related to his life’s work.
Adolph had an incredible sense of humor, loved a good story and told a few himself. He loved the land, the great out-of-doors, his church and family. He enjoyed getting out and walking a” no place in particular, as long as he could see the crops growing, hear the birds singing and view occasional wildlife.
Adolph married Beverly Jean Pearson of Warroad on June 24, 1947 at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad. Five children were born to this marriage.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Stanley, Axel, and Andrew; and sisters, Rose Lindgren, Hildur Lindgren-Sunsten and Irene Lindgren-Kvarnlov.
Adolph is survived by his wife, Beverly; two sons, Richard Dale (Bonnie) Lindgren of Glendive, MT and Jon Scott (Valerie) Lindgren of Thief River Falls, MN; three daughters, Judith Marlene (Jim) Lindgren-Hatcher of Sharpsburg, Maryland, Delsie Kaye (Arthur) Lindgren-Thiessen of Salol, MN, and Lorie Jean (Frank) Lindgren-Homme of Salol, MN; brother, Bill Lindgren of Lancaster, CA; and sister, Jennie Lindgren-Kimble-Nelson of Roseau, MN; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
